Memory is a complex concept that constantly plays tricks on us. When we attempt to recall certain events from our past, they are almost never concrete or set-in-stone. Instead, they are rather fragile, unstable, and continuously fleeting as time passes. With our recollection inevitably influenced by our unique perspectives and emotional responses to the situation, we may remember a past event quite differently than others who were in the same room as us. In times where we struggle to remember, we may turn to alternative sources that serve as evidence as being factual, such as photographs or stories told to us by others. My work incorporates memory to investigate personal trauma, while simultaneously bringing attention to how memory can be very fragile and unreliable. All my life, I have struggled with numerous personal obstacles, such as Attention Deficit Disorder, physical health issues, shyness, sensitivity, and anxiety. I had also found it challenging to process and express these feelings, especially at a young age, unable to comprehend what these struggles were and how I would overcome them; a dilemma that I continue to face even now in my adult life. My work focuses on emotion, memory, personal experience, and aims to relate to, and generate authentic reactions and feelings from the viewer. These ideas are portrayed through self-portraiture and fusing aspects of realism and abstraction. Some pieces are considerably abstracted, expressing intense emotion, while others convey their message in a more quiet, controlled, and subtle manner.
