Evaluation of Concrete Mixes for Filling the Steel Arches in the Galena Creek Bridge

The general objective of this research is to develop improved analytical methods for predicting the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete beam subjected to torsion and to verify these especially for high strength concrete. This was accomplished by examining experiments in the literature as well as conducting finite element analysis. Thirty-one beams were analyzed using the finite element approach. Comparisons were made between the finite element results, experimental results and theoretical results. Furthermore, a statistic method was used to analyze the significant variables and a practical equation was obtained for predicting the capacity of torsion. To check the accuracy of the formula, the calculated strength was checked against the experimental results of 76 reinforced concrete beams available in the literature and the finite element results. In the analytical study, it was found the finite element method could be used to predict the cracking and ultimate capacity of torsion in normal, medium and high-strength concrete very well. Also the good agreement was found in the new proposed prediction equation.
