Supplements of chicken essence increase sleep in fruit flies

PosterAbstract
Sleep is a conserved behavior and has vital functions among animal species. Many drugs or natural ingredients have been used to amount of sleep or improve sleep quality. Brand's Essence of Chicken® (BEC) has been used for its general health benefits for nearly 200 years. The extract has been shown to help improve memory and mood and contains many free amino acids. It is not known whether BEC has beneficial effects on sleep. The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has been well used as a model for sleep and circadian studies. Here we used fruit flies to investigate the effects of BEC on sleep. Our results indicated that BEC significantly increases fly sleep, mainly during the day. Furthermore, certain parts of the chicken resulted in a greater increase in sleep than other parts. Future work will focus on identifying the active ingredients in these parts for sleep changes and test whether it has conserved effects on mammal sleep.
