Government Cheese Case Study

In this paper, we present a case study that uses a Planet Money podcast to introduce microeconomics students to several important concepts. The podcast, which is about a policy intervention in the dairy industry, will help to teach students not only to how markets function, but also about unintended consequences of government price supports. Our case study first introduces several learning objectives that will be covered by the material before providing a background explanation of the case using a supply and demand framework; this material is purposed as a reading companion by students in tandem to listening to the podcast (a transcript of the podcast is also available in order to ensure the accessibility of the materials). We next provide a set of questions used for student evaluation, along with a table displaying meta-data on each question, such as the expected difficulty level, appropriate learning objective and associated level on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Finally, we provide a detailed set of teaching notes that will give instructors the additional background material necessary to convey this information to the students effectively.
