Electrical engineering at the University dates back to 1906, when the field of electrical engineering was just emerging. In our early years, we helped bring new technology such as light bulbs and telegraphs to the people of Nevada. Throughout the department's long history, we've worked hard to keep doing just that.

Electrical engineering has gone from a field focused on electricity to a diverse profession that deals with electronics, communications, control, instrumentation design, image and signal processing, and power systems in a wide range of applications, from homes to hospitals. In 2006, as part of a developing interest in biomedical applications, the department added biomedical engineering to our name and our areas of focus. Since then, our innovative researchers have worked on developing engineering solutions to medical challenges.
